..With Matching Local Wines & Brews
Hello Perth Wine Lovers and Foodies! Who else is missing hanging out at your fav little cafe, restaurant or wine bar? I certainly am! Majority of the time, these places don’t offer us take-away… And that’s OK! Because we can actually go there. Then COVID-19 came and shattered the hospitality and tourism industry (CRY). Fortunately, many eateries decided to remain ‘open for business’ and offer take-away to the good people of Perth! TAKEAWAY HAS NEVER BEEN SOOO GOOD!
I’m a big foodie and love to support my local wineries so, I thought I’d bring to you a little list of my Go-To Perth Takeaway Eats with some matching local wines and brews. Here we go..
LupoLab – Mt Hawthorn
Italian food and wine go together like a horse and carriage, g’day and mate, Cheech and Chong.. you get the picture! It’s a match made in foodie heaven. Although an easier cuisine to make at home, it can be pretty difficult to get that authentic Italian taste like if someone’s Nonna has been tucked away in the cucina crafting her food with love and old-school skill you just can’t quite master.
One of our favourite local restaurants to dine in is Lupolab, found in the heart of bustling Mount Hawthorn. You can consider this little gem ‘the new kid on the block’ but WOWEE aren’t they on fire! The owner was born and bred in Rome within the food industry and has bought his authentic, traditional and mouth-watering dishes to Perth (THANK YOU!!).
We’re very excited by the fact they are doing take-away 7 DAYS A WEEK! You can try a different pasta every night of the week. A big plus is that they are doing 25% off the usual menu price! My advice – pair a Riverbank Tempranillo or the Faber Grenache with any of the red based & meaty pastas. Try the Faber Vineyard Chardonnay with their creamy dishes, the tonnarello carbonara or gnocchi porcini and mushroom. OK.. my mouth is watering now..
Odyssea – City Beach
To the sea we go! And what a beautiful sea we have to look at in Perth… Do you know what else is beautiful? Odyssea in City Beach! This Ocean side restaurant has been one of my go-tos for breakfast, lunch and dinner ever since they opened. Whether it’s for a casual catch-up, date night, birthday celebration or family affair, Odyssea has something on their menu for everyone, pristine views, friendly and efficient service and a wine and cocktail list that has us singing!
One of the best things about Odyssea is the extensive menu and variety of food on offer. From the freshest seafood to mouth-watering kangaroo dishes, from Mexican style tortillas to good ol’ fish & chips.. as mentioned before – there’s something for everyone. They have condensed this menu to bring an ALL-DAY take-away menu 7 DAYS A WEEK. WOO! The clever chefs are also offering the ‘daily features’ menu with something different available every day from Monday through to Thursday and then finishing it off with a Sunday Roast on, well Sunday of course. Roasted meat and mixed roasted veges with a sticky date pudding to finish off.. YUMMO.
I’d personally pair Riverbank Estate ‘Eric Anthony’ 2017 Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir with the WA Fish & Chips, a can of Feral Brewery’s Perth Local Lager with the Tortilla’s or the Odyssea Burger and Jane Brook Estate’s Back Block Shiraz with their Beef Fillet. Don’t forget to order a side (or two) of their Potatoes. They take potatoes to a whole new level!
Canteen Trigg
Whilst we’re on the coast, let’s head up north about 7kms to another sea-side favourite of mine.. the very casual, the very cool, Canteen Trigg. This joint is a crazy hot spot for all ages dishing up everyone’s fav foods at a friendly price. You can literally walk up from the beach, dry off and order some epic food OR make it more of an occasion – meet some friends there, get your drinks from Island Market next door and have an array of delectable dishes to share over a couple of sunset bevvies.
Canteen always had their hand up for take-away meals, however when COVID-19 hit and the hospitality industry stood still, they closed their doors and it was sad faces for a lot of local loyalists. BUT NOT TO FEAR! They have just recently re-opened their beach-side beauty for take-away bites, featuring a reduced menu with all the favs on offer.
Although I highly recommend their breakie trays.. If we’re talking food and alcohol matching here then I would pair any of their Seafood Trays with either Lancaster Wine’s Sparkling, Verdelho or Rosé (Rosé if you’re up for something slightly sweeter). Grab a burger and pair it with FUNK Ciders ‘Saison Cider’. Another personal favourite of mine is the Seared Haloumi with oven roasted veges (YUUUM). I’d match this one with a Sandalford Estate 1840 Cabernet Merlot.
King Somm – Bayswater
All hail the KING! This place is the ultimate neighbour wine bar – with its industrial chic interior, cool courtyard vibes (like you’re hanging out in your bestie’s backyard), flavoursome food and legendary drinks menu, it’s no wonder King Somm has been on the hit list for many Perth Locals for the past year and a half. Tucked away in Bayswater, you’ll find King Somm ‘Bar’ perched next to their fabulous little bottle shop – so really it’s got everything you need if you’re a wino and foodie!
I’ve eaten at King Somm a few times.. and will continue to! Their food screams pure quality – what they offer is simple, honest to goodness nosh with no useless fluff to hide something that’s not quite hitting the mark.. because it all hits the mark. They serve up a range of antipasto style dishes, wood-fired pizzas, pasta, salads and other dishes (had the spare lamb ribs once – OMG) to get you salivating.
KS are offering take-away (with delivery options) every Wednesday to Sunday from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. You MUST get the pizzas! It’s all about the base baby and these bases rock. Accompanied with simple and flavoursome toppings and you’re set. Although they do have their bottle shop right there, we’re talking about supporting some local wineries here! So, I would grab Mann Winery’s dry style Rosé to go with the Margherita or Porchetta Pizza. For your pizzas laced with salami, pepperoni or bresaola I’d suggest a red wine with some oomph – like Mandoon Estate’s Old Vine Grenache, Old Vine Shiraz or their Cab Merlot. Bellissima!
Wines of While – North Bridge
This cool little joint would have to be hands down one of my favourite wine bars in Perth. Period. I’m not going to go on about the wines because yes.. they are fab, natural, from all over the world, unique and available to drink in or take-away but I’m going to give you the dish on the dishes they serve up!
BREAD is always the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Wines of While food.. and it’s always the first thing ordered alongside a big dollop of salted butteerrrr. Give me just this, and a glass of wine, and I’m one happy girl. Throw in a tin of sardines sourced from Portugal (truly the best Sardines), and I’m on cloud nine. If you’re impartial to Sardines, then there’s always their house favourite white bean dish or the charcuterie items like terrine, cold cuts, olives and pickles. Then finish off with a fresh salad and hero pasta dish.
They’ve reduced their in-house menu to offer a list of ‘Grocery’ items, Pasta – To be cooked at home – Breads, a couple of side dishes and ‘Other Bits’ which feature Tinned Fish! WOO! All available for pick up from midday Tuesday through to Sunday. Once again, these legends are a bottle shop also – but for my recommendations of local wines to go with some of their takeaway then I would look no further than a traditionally made Sparkling Wine like Sittella’s Cuvee Blanc to go with their Sourdough and butter.. Then finish off that loaf of bread with a bottle of Myattsfield Vineyard Pinot Noir (do the Italian thang and dip your bread in the wine!). If you’re like me and LOVE sardines then chow down on the fishy goodness atop of the bread – this style of fish needs a crisp wine like Mandoon Estate’s Vermentino or move onto something a little heavier like Mandoon’s Reserve 2018 Chardonnay – it will go beautifully with the white beans!
