A couple of weeks ago, Ewen and I went along to a ‘Wine Social’. I totally didn’t know WHAT to expect, seeing as it wasn’t an appreciation course, but yet a ‘social’. And what a social it was! Tucked away in the very cool Helvetica Bar in the city, Christina Pickard entertained us with her love and knowledge of great wine.
Christina, New York born, having traveled the wine world has the totally awesome job of being a professional wine broadcaster and writer. She now resides in Perth and also runs a ‘School of Wine’ which offers a ‘non-pretentious’ approach to wine education through masterclasses and tastings held at Perth’s top restaurants and bars as well as corporate and private wine events.
So, as I said, I didn’t know WHAT to expect of this Wine Social and any expectations I had on the night were completely met and more! It was a small intimate gathering of people from all different walks of life, tasting different wines from all over the world, answering (or fluke) the wine-quiz questions Christina gave us, enjoying the spread of cheese and other nibbles and just genuinely having a jolly ol’ time. The evening went for roughly 2 hours and I’d recommend not driving in because by the time you’re finished.. well you get the picture.
We had such a good time and learnt A LOT, with out even realising that it was supposed to be educational. Christina made it fun and very relaxing, sometimes it ain’t easy turning up to a social where you only know one or two other people! We will certainly be going along to more of Christina’s School of Wine events and hopefully you will too. The next wine social with Christina will be held at Helvetica Bar on March 11th from 7-9pm.
